A combined environment
and individual improvement programme. Its purpose was to create local
training and employment opportunities to improve the local environment,
specifically by improving local green spaces and parks.
Vocational training in
horticulture and grounds maintenance was the focus of the skills
development for unemployed local residents.
A community-based enterprise
has been established by the newly qualified trainees to provide
commercial grounds maintenance services in the local area.
It is a fine example
of how inner city regeneration can integrate the triple needs of
taking responsibility of the local environment - the parks in particular
- learning how to care more scientifically for the local parks and
environment and create longer-lasting employment opportunities by
training in horticulture for local use.
To date this project provided guidance and advice, training and support programmes to 17 people. 4 people have obtained NVQs. This project has received both ERF & ERDF funding . The ERDF funding will finish on 1stSeptember 2001.
"Growing Together" is
the clearest way of describing this environmentally -friendly project
which is additionally supported through the New Deal initiative.
