URBAN Area (Map)

The URBAN area outlined by the map to the right is populated with over 17,000 residents. This population has a mix of backgrounds and a higher than average proportion of ethnic minorities and unemployed people.

A combination of different cultural, social and economic structures has led to both a challenging and vibrant environment. Many successful forms of music, art, business, community and family activities go underlie the historical problems associated with an often deprived, under-resourced and poorly motivated inner city area. However, this has not held back the local population from continuously searching for and developing new ways of improving the region. The Bristol URBAN Programme has helped this process further with a current total investment of almost £7,000,000. Each of the many initiatives and projects are showing signs of creating a deeper sense of purpose and confidence in the local communities.

The following highlights are just a few of the emerging benefits of the Bristol URBAN Programme:

  • New job opportunities
  • New start-up businesses
  • Cross-boundary networks and partnerships
  • Improved community buildings and training facilities
  • Improvements in the environment and appearances of the parks
  • Refurbished shop fronts and surrounding locale
  • Training, development and capacity building.

Self-development, self-motivation and improving self-esteem are all characteristics of this changing and growing region. Ownership of the problems as well as the solutions to change, by the local community, has gone a long way in creating and sustaining the required shift in the URBAN area's 'personality', without any loss of soul or roots.

Integrating different hopes and desires into a series of communities has created a simple aim of 'greater prosperity, greater responsibility and greater opportunity for all in the Bristol URBAN area'.
